How to drink Armenian brandy: glass, temperature and pairings

Twenty or thirty years in oak is the time a spirit needs to gain colour, softness and a complex aroma. To enjoy all of it you need no ritual — just a few simple rules.

The glass

A tulip glass works best: its wide base and narrow rim gather the aroma and bring it to you. A classic brandy snifter is fine too. Avoid shot glasses — the aroma is gone at once.

Pour a little, 30–40 ml: enough for the brandy to breathe and for you to see its colour.

Temperature

Room temperature, 18–20 °C, is ideal. Don't chill or heat the bottle. If you want a little more warmth, hold the glass in your hands for a couple of minutes. Never warm it over a flame: the alcohol evaporates sharply and drowns the finer notes.

The first minutes

Pour and wait three to five minutes. Time in the glass opens the aroma just as years in the barrel shaped the taste. Then taste in order:

  1. Look at the colour — deep amber with golden light in an aged brandy.
  2. Bring the glass to your face without putting your nose inside. Fruit comes first, then vanilla, oak and nuts.
  3. Take a small sip and hold it on your tongue. A good brandy has a long finish — take your time before the next.

What to serve with it

Armenian brandy is good on its own, but it pairs beautifully with:

  • dark chocolate,
  • walnuts and almonds,
  • dried apricots, figs and other dried fruit,
  • aged hard cheese,
  • a cup of strong coffee after dinner.

Lemon with sugar is a familiar habit but not the best match: acid and sugar cover the aroma the brandy spent decades building.

Ice and cocktails

Drink aged brandy without ice — cold closes the aroma. To soften the strength, add a few drops of room-temperature water; it can even open certain notes. For cocktails, choose a younger brandy.

Storing an opened bottle

Keep the bottle upright, away from light and heat. Unlike wine, spirits do not age in the bottle, but once opened the aroma slowly changes in contact with air. Finish an opened bottle within a few months.

Every TUFF bottle is closed with a cap of volcanic tuff, cut by hand. When the bottle is empty the stone remains — keep it as a small piece of Armenia.
