Yerevan is one of the few capitals where brandy is made in the city itself. A tasting is a good way to understand why Armenian brandy has its reputation, and it takes about an hour and a half.
Factory tours
The two oldest brandy houses of Yerevan run guided tours with a tasting: the Yerevan Brandy Company (Ararat) and the Noy factory. A tour usually includes the history of the house, the ageing cellars with oak barrels and a tasting of several brandies of different ages.
- Book in advance, especially in summer and before holidays. Tours run in several languages.
- Take an ID: tastings are for adults only.
- Plan a taxi back. You will drink several samples.

A tasting at home
You do not need a tour to taste Armenian brandy properly. Two bottles of different ages show more than a cellar full of barrels.
- Take two brandies of different ages. For example TUFF XO, 20 years and TUFF Heritage, 30 years.
- Use tulip glasses. A narrow rim holds the aroma. More in which glass to choose.
- Pour 20 to 30 ml at room temperature, about 18 to 20 °C.
- Start with the younger brandy. Look at the colour, smell it, then take a small sip and hold it.
- Compare. Older brandy usually shows more dried fruit, wood and spice, and a longer finish.
- Add water if you like. A few drops of room-temperature water open the aroma.
