In the 2000 US census, about one resident of Glendale, California, in four was Armenian. Watertown near Boston, Queens in New York and Fresno have large Armenian communities too. Where Armenian families shop, Armenian brandy is usually on the shelf, and it is often easier to find there than in a big supermarket.
This guide covers where to buy it in the United States, how online delivery of spirits works, how to check that a bottle is genuine, and what to do if you are buying in Armenia itself.
Shops in Armenian communities
The surest place to start is an Armenian, Russian or Middle Eastern grocery or liquor store in an area with a large Armenian community: Glendale and the wider Los Angeles area, Watertown in Greater Boston, Queens and the New York area, Fresno. These shops know the producers, and staff can usually tell you what has just come in.
Stock in small shops changes from week to week. Call ahead or check the shop's website before you drive across town for one bottle.
US chains and online liquor stores
Several American retailers list Armenian brandy on their websites. In October 2026, Total Wine & More listed Ararat 5 Star VS and Ararat Collection Reserve 10 years, with availability depending on the store. Mission Liquor, a California shop that sells online, listed bottles from Noy, Saint Grigor, Mane, Mijnaberd and Proshyan (the factory that also makes TUFF). ShopSK in Los Angeles and Orange County listed Noy Araspel.
Ranges change often, so treat this as a snapshot and search each shop for "Armenian brandy" before you order.
To compare shops, use Wine-Searcher. It is a search engine that shows which merchants list a bottle and at what price, then sends you to the seller. It does not sell anything itself.
How spirits delivery works in the US
Alcohol shipping is regulated state by state. An online shop can send a bottle only to states where it is allowed to, which is why a site may take your order for one address and refuse another. The shop checks your address at checkout.
Some practical points:
- You must be 21 or older. Shops ask you to confirm your age on the site, and couriers ask for an adult signature on delivery. Remedy Liquor, for example, requires a signature from someone 21 or over with a valid ID and does not waive it.
- Many shops do not deliver to PO boxes or carrier hold locations, so give a street address where someone will be home during the day.
- The US Postal Service does not carry beer, wine or liquor except in limited cases, so shipments go by private carriers.
- A producer in Armenia cannot simply post a bottle to you. Direct shipping of spirits from a distillery to consumers is allowed only in a handful of states (eight plus Washington, D.C., according to Avalara's guide updated in October 2026), and an Armenian producer still needs a US importer. In practice, Armenian brandy reaches American buyers through importers and US shops.
How to check that a bottle is genuine
A few minutes with the label tells you most of what you need. Our guide on how to choose Armenian brandy goes into age codes and stars; here are the points that matter most when you buy in the US.
- The name: under US rules, "Cognac" is reserved for grape brandy distilled in the Cognac region of France. A bottle sold in the US through normal import says "Armenian brandy". In Armenia and the former Soviet countries the same spirit has long been called cognac, so a bottle labelled only "коньяк" in Russian was probably made for another market. It may well be genuine, but ask the shop where it came from.
- The importer: imported spirits in the US must carry "Imported by" (or a similar phrase) with the importer's name and the city and state of its business. If that line is missing, ask.
- The producer: look for the producer's name and an address in Armenia, plus a clear age statement.
- The seal: the cap and any box should be intact. Avoid bottles with a torn seal or a box that does not match the bottle.
- The price: twenty years in oak costs money. An "old" brandy far below the price of similar bottles elsewhere deserves a second look.
Buying in Armenia
If you are travelling, the choice in Yerevan is much wider than in any shop abroad. Brandy is sold in specialist spirits shops, in supermarket chains and through local delivery sites. At Zvartnots airport, the duty free shop in departures carries a large range; see our Zvartnots duty free guide and our list of what to bring from Yerevan.
Before you fly, check how much alcohol your own country lets you bring in without duty. For the US, you must be 21 or older, duty applies above the personal exemption, and your state may set its own limits: California's alcohol authority, for example, says bottles must travel with you and may not be shipped on later. The current numbers are on the US Customs and Border Protection website.
