The house: How TUFF Armenian brandy is made

They say stone remembers more than people do.

In Armenia, homes and churches have been built of tuff for centuries, and streets paved with it. The craft of working the stone passes from one generation to the next. TUFF carries on that tradition: every cap is carved by hand, the stone worked with care.

Everything of value takes time

Stone, vine, master

  1. MillenniaThe stone

Over thousands of years, volcanic ash and pumice turned into tuff. The soft, porous stone has kept the warm colours of the Armenian land.

  2. A yearThe vine

Grapes need a whole season under the Ararat sun to take in the character of this land: volcanic soil, hot dry summers, cold snowy winters.

  3. YearsThe master

The skill of the stonecutter and of the cellar master comes with the years. That is why no one hurries here: time cannot be replaced.

The land

From the Ararat valley

TUFF is made from two native white grapes of the Ararat valley, Mskhali and Kangun, and aged in Caucasian oak: TUFF XO comes from the 2004 harvest (the 50 ml miniature from 2003), TUFF Heritage from 1994. Over the years in the barrel the aroma opens and the character takes shape.

The craft

The master of the stone

Every cap is cut from tuff and finished by hand, its size fitted precisely. In the film, the master explains how this stone shapes the sound of Armenian churches, and why people say houses of tuff “breathe”.

TUFF — The cap

Some 28 shades of tuff are found on the Armenian Highland, from the pink stone of Artik to the ochre of Ani and the black and red of Yerevan. This light, porous stone is easy to carve and lasts for centuries. The churches of Ani and the walls of Yerevan were built of it. TUFF caps are cut from it too, then finished by hand by a master mason.

Volcanic tuff from the Armenian Highland.

  2. 02Cut

A tuff blank that echoes the shape of the bottle.

  3. 03Finished by hand

Shaped, polished and sealed by a master mason.

  4. 04The finishing touch

Set on the bottle, to stay with you for years.

When the brandy is finished, the hollow tuff cap stays with you. A small piece of Armenia to keep.

In the master's words

A gift to the Armenian people

The sound of churches

The master believes the particular acoustics of Armenian churches owe much to tuff.

Houses that breathe

In a house of tuff, he says, you breathe freely. Concrete walls, in his view, never give you that feeling.

The taste of the land

Fruit, vegetables and water carry the minerals of the volcanic earth.

Only here

Volcanic tuff in this form is characteristic of Armenia: it is the stone of its highlands.

“This stone was a great gift to the Armenian people.”

A thousand-year story, carved in stone

TUFF Heritage caps are carved by hand from natural tuff. The carving reproduces the reliefs of Armenian monuments, and the shade of the stone matches the monument each edition is dedicated to.

TUFF in brief

What is TUFF Armenian brandy?
